Changing your default Font for Notes emails

I was asked recently "How do you change the font that Notes uses by default when you compose an email in Notes?"

My initial thought was that you might change the design of the Email form. But that wasn't a user friendly way of doing it. In fact there is an easy way of changing your font: but there's one small bit of information you need to understand first.

When you compose an email, you use a font called "Default Sans Serif". From within Notes it looks like just another font on your PC: similar to Arial or Courier. But: it's a bit different. You won't find Default Sans Serif in any other application on your PC. You won't see it in your Word Processor.

Default Sans Serif
is a virtual font. You can choose any 'proper' font on your PC and say "whenever Notes wants to use a Font that it calls Default Sans Serif, it will use the Font that you have chosen in User Preferences".

If you go into User Preferences you can change the association from the usual font (which in my case happened to be Microsoft Sans Serif) and select any other font. Click on the Default Fonts button:

(In Notes 8 it is under File; Preferences... Basic Notes Client Configuration.)

Once you've done that, it's necessary to restart Notes and compose a new email before you see the change. Every email you write from them on will use your new font. You could choose MingLiU, or WingDings, or any strange font that takes your fancy. As well as changing the font used when you write emails, you'll see that it changes the fonts in other areas of Notes: on Action Buttons and on the list of views displayed in a navigators, etc..

If you decide that you hate the new font, revert your Default Sans Serif Font back to Microsoft Sans Serif and restart Notes.

By the way: "Microsoft San Serif" is a rather nice font.

The very similarly named "MS Sans Serif" seems to be a much lighter and (to me) less attractive font.

Thanks Anthony. This is a very clear and thorough explanation of how to change the default font in the notes client.

Thanks Anthony for the great explanation. I saw that this modification added the line StaticFont1=Arial|0|26 to the notes.ini file.

New emails are now composed in Arial 10 but is there also a way to increase the size to 11?
